Es hat sich in den "westlichen" Staaten das CCS Ladesystem für das laden von Elektrofahrzeugen durchgesetzt. CCS (engl. Combined Charging System) ist dabei ein internationaler Standard welcher das laden mit Gleich- (DC) und Wechselstrom (AC) beschreibt.
Die Steckervarianten sind dabei im Teil 3 der IEC 62196 (International Electrotechnical Commission) beschrieben und in Deutschland in die DIN EN 62196 übernommen worden.
In Europa hat man sich auf den Steckertyp EN 62196 Typ 2 über die EU-Kommission im Jan. 2013 geeinigt. In den USA hat man sich hingegen für den Steckertyp 1 entschieden. Typ 1 ist für das einphasige Laden und Typ 2 für das dreiphasige Laden mit Wechselstrom ausgelegt.
Da Elektrofahrzeuge mit Gleichstrom betrieben werden, ist es fahrzeugseitig einfacher mit Gleichstrom (DC = engl. direct current) als mit Wechselstrom (AC = engl. alternating current) zu laden. Dann wandert der Gleichrichter vom Fahrzeug in die Ladesäule.
